The “Machu Picchu of the North” still holds secrets
Located in La Libertad region, the Marcahuamachuco citadel continues to reveal remains and objects that broaden our understanding of Andean societies.
Famous for its monumental stone architecture and known as the “Machu Picchu of the North,” the historic citadel surprised everyone again in July 2025: archaeologists from the Ministry of Culture found human burials, animal remains and valuable metal artifacts among its walls.
But that is not all. Underground architectural structures and areas that had never been excavated were also detected, confirming that much remains to be discovered beneath its imposing walls.
