Sacred Valley and Andean mountains on the way to kilometer 82 of the Inca Trail

"The Inca Trail is for the mind, not the feet...", as the best Perú Inkas guides say. We start by picking you up from your hotel in Cusco and heading to kilometer 82. Along the way, enjoy stunning views of the Sacred Valley and traditional Andean villages. On arrival we get ready with our equipment, cross the Urubamba River and begin the hike to Llactapata, an ancient Inca fortress used for agricultural and defensive purposes.

At Tayaroc we enjoy lunch surrounded by native flora and an impressive mountain landscape. The trail continues through the Cusichaka valley to our campsite at Wayllabamba, where we serve a light snack and dinner, resting for the next day's challenge: climbing the Warmiwañusqa Pass (Dead Woman's Pass).

Inca Trail: Inca stone steps toward Dead Woman's Pass

The second day begins with a nutritious breakfast before starting the climb through the Ayapata valley. A one-hour hike takes us through a unique microclimate and forest until we reach the challenging Warmiwañusqa pass, at 4,200 m (13,779 ft).

The trail is bordered by ancient Inca stone steps and offers panoramic views of snow-capped peaks such as Huayanay. We enjoy lunch at Llulluchapampa with spectacular views, and the trail continues through the cloud forest and puna, home to hummingbirds, condors and deer.

After reaching the summit, we descend to the Pacaymayo valley, where our campsite awaits with hot tea and a hearty dinner to replenish energy for another day of Andean adventure.

Inca Trail: path and archaeological sites such as Sayacmarca and Wiñaywayna

After breakfast we begin a steep climb from Pacaymayo to the archaeological site of Runkurakay, an ancient Inca tambo. An hour later we reach the second mountain pass with panoramic views, including the impressive Pumasillo mountain range.

The trail descends through a small tunnel and winds down to Sayacmarca, a majestic Inca city perched on a rocky promontory. Continuing, we reach Chaquicocha for a well-deserved lunch and rest.

In the afternoon the trail reveals even more natural and archaeological beauty as we pass through Phuyupatamarca and descend toward Intipata and Wiñaywayna. Along the granite path and ancient stone stairways, enjoy impressive views of the Aobamba valley.

At Wiñaywayna we visit one of the best-preserved and most beautiful Inca complexes before camping. As it is a more popular site, we recommend safely storing your personal belongings. The day ends with afternoon tea and a buffet dinner, preparing for the long-awaited arrival at Machu Picchu.
