History

The origin of the devotion in the seventeenth century

Devotion to Señor de Huanca dates back to the seventeenth century and has its origin in two miraculous stories explaining how God chose this place to manifest himself among mankind.

First apparition

Diego Quispe's cave

In 1675, during the mining boom in Yasos, Indigenous workers were exploited by the Spanish. A miner named Diego Quispe defended an abused coworker, which led to an arrest warrant being issued against him.

He fled at night and found refuge in a cave near Huanca, where he prayed for protection. In the darkness, a radiant figure appeared to him: the suffering Christ. Deeply moved, Diego knelt and received a message of love and forgiveness: Jesus told him that this place would become a symbol of hope.

The second apparition and the image

Months later, in June, Diego returned accompanied by the priest of Chinchero and a group of believers.

When they entered the cave, the image of Christ appeared again, this time with fresh wounds. Everyone witnessed the miracle, marking the first pilgrimage to the Huanca Sanctuary.

A painting on the rock — after the miracle, Diego asked a Cusco painter to depict the image of Christ as he had seen it.
Faith that consecrated the place — although the Church did not officially confirm the miracle, the faith of the people made Huanca a sacred and miraculous place.

Since then, Señor de Huanca has become a symbol of faith, healing and hope for thousands of believers who visit every year seeking comfort and spiritual renewal.
